Performance Links Closely with Breathing

Painter, calligrapher, vocalist, musician, dancer…
Seemingly, the world of art is totally different from that of sports, but there are many similar points between the two.
Both art and sports can be called as physical art, in a sense to realize the ultimate body performance using sharpened five senses and the sixth sense.
Finger touch, delicate breathing, posture, etc, are included in the essential factors for creating first-class works.
When motion and breathing are nicely interlocked, comfortable feeling and good performance is created.
Let me explain it referring to the art of Japanese calligraphy.
Japanese calligraphy is closely linked to the way of breathing, in other words, delicate linking between brushstrokes and breathing appears in the work.
If the stroke breaks off, free and lively line cannot be created.
The motion with good tempo always links with breathing, as seen in that the breath is held whenever the brush motion is stopped.
In theatrical art, actor’s (actress’) way of breathing changes the tension or the atmosphere of the stage.
The whole stage atmosphere is changed, depending on actor’s (actress’) sensitive touch for increase and decrease of tension.

Body in a Relaxed Condition

Breathing becomes erratic when having a stress.
Mental stress affects the body, changing the body into the tense condition with throbbing, nervous, sick feelings, and at the same time breathing becomes erratic and the supply of oxygen and energy to the whole body becomes insufficient.
Then the muscle stiffens unconsciously.
When unnecessary strength is added to the body, instantaneous judgment is slowed and the next motion cannot be followed smoothly.

To Relax Is Not to Retain Unnecessary Power in the Body

As seen above, breathing is very important for both athletes and artists, in view of achieving the ultimate performance.
Because of the link between body motion and stable breathing, five senses and the sixth sense can be sharpened, body motion gets smoother, and inherent body power can be fully brought out.
Always having a relaxed condition or always doing proper body care to maintain good breathing is most important for the body.
